How to Clean Water Marks using Greaseproof Paper

Did you know you can use Greaseproof Paper (wax paper) to remove water marks on bathroom fixtures like taps, drains and shower heads! You may have seen this hack on TikTok, and surprisingly it actually works!

I had long given up on trying to remove water marks on chrome bathroom fittings. But as soon as I tried using greaseproof paper, I was able to get them looking like they were completely new again.

Using Greaseproof paper to clean water marks

The Problem: Water Marks

Water marks are a common issue in bathrooms, especially on fixtures such as faucets, showerheads, and handles. These pesky spots are caused by the minerals found in water, which accumulate on surfaces over time. While there are numerous commercial cleaning products available for tackling water marks, they often contain harsh chemicals and require a significant amount of elbow grease.

I’ve yet to find any product that can successfully remove water marks on chrome and stainless steel bathroom fixtures that works as well as simple Greaseproof Paper.

The Solution: Greaseproof Paper

Greaseproof paper, commonly used in the kitchen for lining baking trays or wrapping food, is an unexpected yet effective solution for cleaning water marks on bathroom fixtures. Its unique composition allows it to easily lift away mineral deposits without damaging surfaces.

How to Remove Water Marks in the Bathroom with Greaseproof Paper

Here is my simple routine for cleaning bathroom fixtures. This leaves them looking brand new! I’ve tested this on chrome and stainless steel fixtures. This won’t work on black or other coloured taps and fixtures and the wax will leave white marks.

  1. Remove any soap scum off the surface with your favourite bathroom cleaner. The greaseproof paper won’t work if there is built up soap scum.
  2. Rub the surface down using a piece of greaseproof paper. Keep going until the fixture looks completely clean. That’s it!

Baking Paper vs Greaseproof Paper?

Don’t use Baking Paper. This is coated with silicon which won’t be effective compared to the wax on the greaseproof paper. I’m not entirely sure how it actually works. But it’s completely effective at removing water marks which I had long given up on!
